Jacob’s daughter Dinah is defiled by Shechem
- Jacob’s daughter Dinah was violated by Shechem the son of Hamor, the Hivvite, the prince of the land. Shechem then fell in love with her and asked his father Hamor saying, "Take this girl for me as a wife." Jacob’s sons have come from the field. Hamor and Shechem asked them for Dinah, they also asked to dwell in their land and to intermarry with them. Shechem promised large marriage gifts.
Shechem wants to intermarry. Jacob’s sons agree as long as every male is circumcised
- Jacob's sons were grieved, and they burned fiercely, because Shechem had committed a scandalous act in Israel. They answered Shechem and his father Hamor with cunning, and said that they will give Dinah to them and will intermarry with them only if every male will be circumcised. Hamor and Shechem were pleased, they spoke to their people saying that everything in Jacob’s possession will now be theirs, and every male in that city became circumcised.
Simeon, Levi and other Jacob’s sons kill every male in the city as the males are in pain
- Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that Jacob's two sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, and they came upon the city with confidence, and they slew every male. And Hamor and his son Shechem they slew with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah out of Shechem's house and left. Jacob's sons came upon the slain and plundered the city that had defiled their sister, taking all their wealth and capturing the women & infants
- Jacob told Simeon and to Levi that Canaanites & Perizzites might gather against him now. Simeon & Levi replied, "Shall he make our sister like a harlot?"
